The Knotted Forest of Lâzloyah

Taniyah’s eyes followed the Knotted tree trunks that surrounded her until they settled on the Great Leeleth soaring below storm grey clouds. Its broad wings stretched across the sky as it continued to circle directly above her. Tensely, her palms fanned out across her enlarged belly as she lay in a dense bed of ferns. Despite the pain, she tried to lie perfectly still to escape perception from its keen eyes. She clenched her teeth under shallow breaths to swallow the pain and prayed that her hammering heartbeat would remain undetected.

Alone. Afraid. And now hunted.

The Great Leeleth descended until it landed on the top of the highest tree nearest her. The treetop swayed under the giant bird, objecting to the added weight. Arching its sweeping wings to steady the peak, the bird squawked repeatedly, summoning the Vâzaroth to Taniyah. Long had these Shadow Riders hunted their prey. The bird’s wings encircled its massive head, touching tip to tip and blocking the splinter of rays that broke through the eerie clouds. It cast a dark shadow over the fern bed that made Taniyah’s heart pound even more. Tears filled her royal blue eyes and trickled down the sides of her face.

She winced as she struggled to rise to her feet. Using her hands as a sling to support her unborn, she tried to run with intolerable pangs but repeatedly fell to the ground. Her long hair became entangled in a berry bush and yanked out strands of her auburn hair as she rose to her feet. The Great Leeleth moved from treetop to treetop, squawking incessantly louder with each change of tree. Its inferno eyes glared down upon her, following her every step.

With much difficulty, she barely ran as she glanced ahead and then back over her shoulder, again and again. Despite her anguish, panic drove her forward as though it were a whip slashing into her unshod feet. Trying to keep her eyes on the Great Leeleth and the path ahead, she tripped over a protruding root. A cry escaped before she grabbed a twig from a fallen limb and shoved it lengthwise between her teeth to muffle her cries and to bite the pain. She grabbed hold of low-lying branches to balance herself as she scrambled to her feet. A branch ripped a hole in her pearl white dress as she zigzagged through the trees, attempting to thwart the Great Leeleth, whose constant squalls were leading the Vâzaroth straight toward her.

Four Vâzaroth reached the fern clearing. One dismounted and knelt to the ground, touching the pearl white shoes in the fern bed. He noticed Taniyah’s broken water and tasted the moisture, then screeched as he forcefully spat it out. A yellow-green gas billowed from his mouth the moment Taniyah’s water and the Rider’s own vileness came into contact, causing a reaction he had not expected. He growled and remounted, scanning the woods with hellfire eyes as he sniffed the air. The demon horses stamped the ground, impatiently awaiting their cue. He continued tracking her steps, with broken branches and trampled vegetation leading the way.

The remaining Vâzaroth followed suit, fanning out beside one another in the delight of the hunt. Branches and twigs snapped under the hooves of their steeds, along with Taniyah’s pail of berries that were crushed into the ground. Her shoes slowly crumbled to ash the further they rode away from the fern bed. The horses’ breath and snorts and pounding hooves grew louder as the gap closed between the Riders and their prey.

Taniyah reached the edge of a sheer cliff shrouded in mist that rose from the roaring waterfall below. A feeling of hopelessness overwhelmed her as she stared into the nothingness. The raging falls drowned the sounds of the Vâzaroth closing completely in on her. She turned and faced the enemy as their mounts slid to a stop, forming a horseshoe circle, backing her to the edge of the cliff.
